For international buyers making their first diamond purchase in India, export documentation is often the part of the trip that feels most opaque — not because it's especially complicated, but because it's an unfamiliar process happening in an unfamiliar system, usually under time pressure at the end of a short trip.
What a legitimate export transaction requires
A compliant export sale generally requires an invoice from a manufacturer with a valid Import Export Code (IEC), supporting documentation on the goods (including certification where applicable), and customs clearance processed through India's export framework. For rough or specific categories, Kimberley Process documentation applies as covered in our separate guide — polished goods carry different requirements.
Why doing this from Mumbai or a generic trading office is harder
Buyers who purchase through trading offices outside a formal export infrastructure often find themselves navigating multiple separate stops — the seller, a customs agent, a shipping company — across a city, with no single point of coordination. That fragmentation is exactly what causes delays and mistakes for first-time buyers on a tight schedule.
Why Surat Diamond Bourse changes this
Surat Diamond Bourse was purpose-built with India's largest dedicated diamond customs house inside the complex itself — meaning a purchase made on the trading floor can move through export clearance without leaving the building. For a foreign buyer on a short trip, that consolidation is a meaningful practical advantage over sourcing through a less formal channel elsewhere. Read more about Surat Diamond Bourse's infrastructure.
Where hosted support fits in
Even with the right infrastructure in place, navigating the paperwork on a first trip is easier with support who has done it before. A hosted VisitSDB visit includes on-site customs support for anything you purchase, so documentation isn't something you're solving alone at the end of your trip.
This is general guidance, not customs or legal advice — buyers should confirm specific requirements with a licensed customs broker. Get in touch to plan a hosted visit.
