For most international jewelry wholesalers and retailers, the diamond supply chain looks something like this: manufacturer, exporter, importer/wholesaler, and sometimes a secondary broker, before a stone ever reaches the buyer making the retail or wholesale decision. Each of those steps is a legitimate business performing a real service — but each one also adds a margin, a delay, and a layer of distance from the stone's actual origin.
Where the cost actually goes
Traditional distribution isn't inefficient because anyone along the chain is acting in bad faith. It's a function of geography and risk allocation: middle-tier buyers take on inventory risk, currency risk, and logistics complexity, and price accordingly. That's rational for them. But for a buyer who is willing to travel and transact directly with a manufacturer, those same costs simply don't need to exist in the price.
Source-direct pricing at Surat Diamond Bourse reflects that reality. A buyer transacting on-site with a manufacturer is negotiating without the accumulated margin of two or three intermediary steps — the savings come from a shorter chain, not from a discount that has to be "found."
Provenance and traceability improve too
Distance from origin doesn't just cost money — it costs certainty. The more hands a stone passes through before reaching a buyer, the harder it becomes to verify origin claims with confidence. Buying directly from a manufacturer inside a secure, regulated trading complex — with on-site customs and export documentation — gives buyers a much shorter, much more verifiable chain of custody. For buyers whose own customers increasingly ask about ethical and traceable sourcing, that's not a minor benefit.
The relationship compounds over time
The biggest difference traditional distribution can't replicate is the relationship itself. A single hosted visit is valuable, but the real return comes from repeat visits and an ongoing direct relationship with manufacturers who now know a buyer's preferences, volume, and standards. Over successive visits, sourcing gets faster, matching gets more precise, and pricing conversations get more efficient — none of which a rotating cast of intermediaries can offer.
What it takes to get started
The tradeoff, historically, has been logistics: arranging travel, vetting which manufacturers are worth meeting, navigating an unfamiliar city, and managing customs and export paperwork on top of the actual buying decisions. That's the exact friction a hosted visit removes. See our 90-day pilot program for how a first visit is structured, or go straight to request a hosted visit.
