How to Verify a Diamond Manufacturer in Surat Is Legitimate

Surat is home to an estimated 6,000+ diamond polishing units, ranging from large integrated exporters with decades of international trade history to small subcontracted workshops that only ever sell to a single trading partner. For a first-time foreign buyer, that range is exactly what makes verification necessary — and exactly what makes it hard to do alone.

Start with export credentials, not sales pitches

Legitimate manufacturers dealing in international trade will have an Import Export Code (IEC) registered with India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and typically membership with an industry body such as the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). Ask for these directly — a manufacturer with genuine export history won't hesitate to share them, and their absence is a real warning sign, not an oversight.

Check for a physical, verifiable trading history

Ask how long the manufacturer has been trading internationally, and with which markets. Established manufacturers can usually speak specifically about export relationships — countries, general volume, and how long specific buyer relationships have run — rather than vague claims. A operating floor you can actually see, with cutting and polishing happening on-site, is a stronger signal than an office that only handles paperwork.

Independent certification is non-negotiable at volume

For any purchase beyond a trial order, insist on independently graded stones from an established gemological lab for larger or higher-value pieces. A manufacturer unwilling to provide or work with independent certification — insisting instead on their own in-house grading only — is a meaningful red flag for a buyer without an existing trust relationship.

Why this is the exact problem a hosted visit solves

None of this verification is complicated once you know what to ask — but doing it alone, in an unfamiliar city, on a short trip, with language and cultural gaps working against you, is genuinely hard. This is the specific value of a hosted VisitSDB visit: every manufacturer we match you with has already been vetted for export legitimacy and trading history, so your time on the ground goes to evaluating stones, not chasing paperwork.
