Surat isn't just the world's largest natural diamond cutting center — it has also become one of the largest producers of cut and polished lab-grown (CVD and HPHT) diamonds globally. For wholesale buyers, that means the sourcing decision between natural and lab-grown isn't about where to go; both are cut in the same city, often by manufacturers who work in both categories. The decision is about your business model.
Price and margin dynamics differ significantly
Lab-grown diamonds carry a substantially lower price point than natural stones of comparable size and grade, and that gap has continued to widen as production scales. For buyers targeting price-sensitive retail segments or younger consumer demographics, that lower entry cost opens volume that natural stones can't reach. For buyers whose customer base specifically values natural rarity, the categories serve genuinely different markets rather than competing directly.
Certification matters even more for lab-grown
Because lab-grown and natural diamonds are visually indistinguishable without specialized equipment, certification isn't optional for lab-grown wholesale buying — it's the entire basis of buyer trust. Insist on lab documentation that explicitly identifies growth method (CVD or HPHT), from an established gemological lab. Manufacturers who are vague about growth method or documentation should be treated as a serious red flag.
Many buyers now source both
A growing share of wholesale buyers carry both categories side by side, letting retail demand determine the mix rather than betting exclusively on one. Surat's manufacturing base supports this well — the same trip can realistically cover both natural and lab-grown sourcing if your buying category spans both.
How to source either at the origin
Whichever category fits your business, the core advantage of buying direct from a Surat manufacturer is the same: transacting with the party that actually cut the stone, with full visibility into specification and available inventory. A hosted VisitSDB visit matches you with manufacturers relevant to your specific buying category — natural, lab-grown, or both — before you arrive.
