Antwerp has been synonymous with the diamond trade for centuries — home to the Antwerp World Diamond Centre and a trading infrastructure, financing network, and international reputation built over generations. Surat, by contrast, is a comparatively young manufacturing hub that has grown to cut an estimated 90% of the world's diamonds by volume within a few decades. For a buyer deciding where to build a first direct sourcing relationship, these are genuinely different value propositions.
What Antwerp offers
Antwerp's strength is trading infrastructure and institutional trust — deep liquidity, established financing mechanisms, and a concentration of experienced traders who can move large, high-value transactions efficiently. For buyers dealing primarily in very high-value individual stones, or who need the specific institutional infrastructure Antwerp has built, that trading depth is real and hard to replicate elsewhere.
What Surat offers
Surat's advantage is proximity to manufacturing at a scale nowhere else matches. Buying direct from a Surat manufacturer means transacting with the party that actually cut the stone — with full visibility into rough sourcing, cutting decisions, and available inventory — rather than buying from a trading desk further down the chain. For buyers focused on wholesale volume, consistent supply, and pricing that doesn't carry the accumulated markup of multiple trading hubs, that directness is the more relevant advantage.
They're not really competing for the same buyer
In practice, a large share of goods traded in Antwerp were originally cut in Surat anyway — the two centers are more complementary than competitive in the global supply chain. The real question isn't which city is "better," it's whether your business model benefits more from institutional trading depth (Antwerp) or from direct manufacturer access at the origin (Surat). Many established buyers ultimately use both, depending on the transaction.
Making Surat accessible for a first trip
Surat's practical downside for new buyers has historically been accessibility — building manufacturer relationships from scratch is harder without existing infrastructure. A hosted VisitSDB visit exists specifically to close that gap, matching you with vetted manufacturers and handling logistics for a first trip.
