The Israel Diamond Exchange in Ramat Gan has one of the most respected reputations in the global diamond trade, built on decades of expertise particularly in larger, higher-value, better-make stones. Surat's reputation is built on manufacturing scale — cutting an estimated 90% of the world's diamonds by volume. Comparing them as competing options misses that they typically play different roles in the same supply chain.
Israel's specialization: quality and trust infrastructure
Israeli dealers have historically specialized in evaluating and trading higher-quality goods, with grading expertise and trading relationships built over generations. For buyers whose business depends on that specific expertise — particularly in larger, investment-grade stones — the trading infrastructure in Ramat Gan offers something genuinely difficult to replicate.
Surat's specialization: manufacturing scale and direct access
Surat's advantage is different: it's where the vast majority of stones traded anywhere in the world, including many that eventually move through Israeli trading, were actually cut. Buying direct from a Surat manufacturer means skipping the trading layer entirely — evaluating parcels with the person who made the cutting decisions, at pricing that doesn't carry an additional hub's markup.
Different buyers, different needs
A buyer specifically seeking rare, high-value, investment-grade individual stones may still be better served by Israeli trading expertise. A buyer sourcing wholesale volume for retail or manufacturing — where consistent supply and cost efficiency matter more than individual-stone rarity — is typically better served sourcing direct from Surat's manufacturing base. Many sophisticated buyers use both, depending on what a specific transaction requires.
Making direct sourcing accessible
The practical challenge for buyers used to trading through established exchanges is that direct manufacturer sourcing requires a different kind of relationship-building — one a hosted VisitSDB visit is specifically built to shortcut, matching you with vetted manufacturers before you arrive.
