Surat doesn't have the tourism infrastructure of a trade-show city like Antwerp or Hong Kong, which means most first-time buyers arrive with genuine, practical questions. Here's what actually matters when planning the trip.
Entry requirements
Most international buyers travel to India on a business visa or the e-Business Visa category, which is designed for exactly this kind of trip — supplier meetings, trade negotiations, and factory or facility visits. Requirements and eligible countries change periodically, so the right move is always to confirm current rules directly with an Indian embassy, consulate, or the official government visa portal before booking travel — not to rely on secondhand guidance, including this article. When VisitSDB hosts a visit, we provide buyers with the supporting documentation (invitation details, itinerary) typically requested as part of a business visa application.
When to go
Surat's climate runs hot for much of the year, with the most comfortable travel window generally from November through February. That said, Surat Diamond Bourse itself is a fully climate-controlled, indoor trading environment — the season affects your comfort getting around the city more than it affects the actual buying trip.
Getting there and around
Surat has its own domestic airport with connections through major Indian hubs, and is also a manageable drive from Mumbai for buyers routing through India's primary international gateway. Within the city, ground transport is straightforward but easiest to navigate with local support — which is one of the more tedious logistics a hosted visit removes entirely.
Safety and security at SDB
Surat Diamond Bourse was built specifically around the security expectations of high-value gemstone trading: bank-grade vaulting, surveillance, and access control across the complex's towers, closer in spirit to a financial exchange than a general commercial building. For buyers, that translates into a controlled, professional environment for evaluating and transacting on stones — not an open trading floor.
Language and business norms
English is widely used in Surat's diamond trade at the business level, and most manufacturers working with international buyers are well practiced in cross-border transactions. Business norms broadly follow international trade-show conventions — scheduled meetings, documented terms, and relationship-building over successive visits rather than one-off transactions.
The case for going hosted
None of this is unmanageable, but stacked together — visa timing, seasonal planning, airport routing, ground transport, and walking into a 4,500-office complex without pre-arranged meetings — it's enough friction that many qualified buyers simply never make the trip. A hosted VisitSDB visit exists to remove exactly that friction: travel coordinated around your schedule, a dedicated host on the ground, and manufacturer meetings matched to your buying profile before you land.
