For all the paperwork and certification involved in wholesale diamond buying, the moment that actually determines whether a deal happens is a physical inspection — a buyer, a loupe or microscope, and a parcel of stones under proper lighting. Here's what that process actually looks like.
Setting up the evaluation
Proper inspection requires controlled, neutral lighting (daylight-equivalent lighting is standard, since incandescent or warm lighting can visually distort color grading) and either a 10x loupe or a gemological microscope for clarity assessment. Any legitimate manufacturer will have this setup readily available and expect buyers to use it.
Working through the 4Cs systematically
Experienced buyers check carat weight against a certified or stated figure, assess color against a graded reference under the controlled lighting, examine clarity under magnification for inclusions and their visibility, and evaluate cut quality — proportions, symmetry, and polish — which affects how the stone actually performs optically, independent of the other three factors.
Sampling a parcel properly
For parcel purchases, don't just examine the stones offered first — pull a representative sample across the parcel, including from the middle and bottom, not just the top-presented stones. This is the single most common mistake new buyers make, and one experienced sellers won't discourage, since it's standard, expected practice.
Asking questions during inspection, not after
Use the inspection as an opportunity to ask the manufacturer directly about anything unclear — treatment history, rough source, or grading rationale for a specific stone. This is one of the clearest advantages of buying direct from a manufacturer rather than through a distributor: you're asking the person who actually made the cutting decisions, not relaying questions up an unresponsive chain.
Bringing this together on a hosted visit
None of this requires special training beyond what most wholesale buyers already know — the challenge for first-time Surat buyers is having the time and manufacturer access to do it properly. A hosted VisitSDB visit is structured to give you that time with matched manufacturers, not a rushed evaluation.
