In wholesale diamond trading, a "parcel" is a grouped batch of stones sold together, usually sharing a similar shape, size range, and quality tier rather than being individually certified and sold one by one. Understanding how parcels are assembled and priced is one of the fastest ways for a new buyer to avoid overpaying or misjudging value.
How parcels are grouped
Manufacturers sort rough and polished production into parcels by shape (round, princess, cushion, and other fancy shapes), size range (often in fractional carat bands), and a quality band covering color and clarity — for example, a parcel might be described as "round, 0.30–0.40ct, G-H color, VS clarity." Individual stones within a parcel will vary somewhat within that band, which is exactly why in-person evaluation matters more in wholesale buying than headline specifications alone.
Melee vs larger-stone parcels
Small stones — generally under 0.18 carats, known as melee — are almost always traded by the parcel, since certifying each stone individually isn't economical at that size. Larger stones are more often sold individually with accompanying certification, though larger parcels of similar-grade goods are still common for buyers purchasing at volume for consistent production runs.
How to actually evaluate a parcel
Reputable sellers will let you go through a parcel stone by stone under a loupe or microscope, not just take their word for the average grade. Pull a meaningful sample — not just the top stones offered first — and check consistency against the stated specification. A parcel where quality varies wildly from the description is a sign to negotiate the price down or walk away, not necessarily a sign of dishonesty, but it changes the math.
Why this matters more when buying direct
When you're buying direct from a Surat manufacturer rather than through a distributor, you get to evaluate parcels with the person who actually sorted them — able to answer questions about why a parcel was graded the way it was. That's a meaningfully different experience than reviewing a parcel description secondhand. Our guide on buying wholesale direct from Surat covers the fuller purchasing process.
