For international buyers planning a diamond sourcing trip to Surat, the visa category matters — meeting manufacturers, evaluating parcels, and conducting trade negotiations generally falls under business activity, not tourism, which means most buyers should apply for an Indian Business Visa rather than a standard e-Tourist visa.
Why the business visa category matters
India's visa framework distinguishes between tourism and business activity, and attending trade meetings, negotiating purchases, or visiting manufacturing facilities as part of a commercial sourcing trip falls under the business category. Traveling on a tourist visa for what is functionally a business trip can create complications, so it's worth applying under the correct category from the outset.
What the application generally requires
Business visa applications typically require an invitation letter from an Indian business contact or organization, confirmation of the nature of business being conducted, and standard supporting documents (passport validity, photographs, and proof of return travel). Requirements and processing times vary by nationality and by the Indian consulate or visa center handling the application, so buyers should confirm current specifics well ahead of a planned trip.
Where a hosted visit simplifies this
One practical advantage of a structured, hosted buying trip is that the organizing entity can typically provide the invitation documentation a business visa application requires, rather than a first-time buyer having to source that independently. This is one of several logistics pieces a hosted VisitSDB visit handles as part of planning your trip.
Plan visa timing early
Visa processing times can vary meaningfully by country and season, so it's worth starting the application process as soon as travel dates are being scoped — well before finalizing flights. See our broader guide on traveling to Surat for a buying trip for the fuller logistics picture.
This is general guidance, not immigration advice — always confirm current requirements with the relevant Indian consulate for your nationality. Get in touch to start planning a visit and we'll help with the documentation your application needs.
