The most obvious difference between buying diamonds through a distributor and buying direct from a manufacturer is price — cutting out an intermediary generally means cutting out their margin. But the more meaningful differences for a wholesale buyer are structural, not just financial.
Specification flexibility
A distributor sells from existing inventory — what they currently have in stock is what you can buy. A manufacturer can often produce or source toward a specific need: a particular size range, quality tier, or volume commitment for an upcoming production run. That flexibility is only available when you're talking to the party actually doing the cutting, not someone reselling from a fixed parcel.
Information quality
When a distributor describes a parcel, they're relaying information from further up the chain — sometimes accurately, sometimes with gaps. A manufacturer can answer questions about rough source, cutting decisions, and the reasoning behind a specific grade firsthand. For buyers who ask detailed questions as part of their evaluation process, that difference in information quality is significant.
Relationship durability
Distributor relationships are often transactional — the next parcel might come from a different source entirely. A direct manufacturer relationship, once established, tends to compound: the manufacturer learns your specification preferences over repeat orders, and pricing and priority often improve with relationship history. See our guide on building a long-term manufacturer relationship for more on this.
What it costs you: access
The real tradeoff is access — manufacturers are harder to find and vet than established distributors, who exist specifically to make sourcing easier for buyers without direct relationships. That's precisely the gap a hosted VisitSDB visit closes, matching you directly with vetted Surat manufacturers rather than requiring you to build that access alone. Our broader breakdown in direct-deal sourcing vs. traditional distribution covers the economics in more depth.
