Diamond certification exists to give buyers an independent, trustworthy assessment of a stone's quality — but "independently certified" isn't a single standard. Grading tends to vary meaningfully between labs, and buyers who treat every certificate as equivalent can end up paying natural-grade prices for stones graded on a looser scale.
GIA: the reference standard
The Gemological Institute of America is widely regarded as the strictest and most consistent major grading lab, and its certificates carry the strongest resale confidence internationally. Stones certified by GIA typically command a premium precisely because buyers trust the grade will hold up under independent re-evaluation.
IGI: faster, more common at volume, generally looser
The International Gemological Institute is the most widely used lab for lab-grown diamonds and is common throughout Indian manufacturing, including Surat. IGI grading is generally considered a notch more generous than GIA's — a stone graded VS1 by IGI may grade closer to SI1 under GIA standards. That's not necessarily a problem, but it needs to be priced accordingly, not treated as equivalent.
What this means practically for wholesale buyers
When comparing pricing across parcels or manufacturers, always check which lab issued the certificate before comparing grades directly — a "VS clarity, IGI" parcel and a "VS clarity, GIA" parcel are not the same offer even if the paperwork reads similarly. For buyers reselling into markets with sophisticated end customers, GIA certification for larger or higher-value stones is usually worth the incremental cost in resale confidence.
What to require from a Surat manufacturer
Reputable manufacturers working with international buyers should be able to offer either lab on request for larger stones, and should be transparent about which lab is being used and why for a given parcel.
