Buying diamonds direct from a manufacturer solves the sourcing problem — but getting a purchase home safely, insured, and properly documented is a separate logistics question every international buyer needs a plan for before they travel, not after.
Specialized carriers vs. standard freight
High-value goods like diamonds are typically moved through specialized secure carriers (such as Brink's, Malca-Amit, or similar diamond and precious-goods logistics providers) rather than standard commercial freight or postal services. These carriers specialize in insured, tracked, chain-of-custody shipping specifically built for the diamond and jewelry trade, and most manufacturers with real export experience will already have working relationships with one or more of them.
Hand-carrying: common, but with real limits
For smaller-value purchases, buyers commonly hand-carry goods personally, which avoids shipping costs and time but comes with its own requirements — proper export documentation must still accompany the goods, declared correctly at both departure and arrival customs, and personal hand-carry typically isn't appropriate or insurable at higher purchase values.
Insurance is not optional
Whichever method you use, cargo or transit insurance specific to the shipment's declared value is essential — standard travel insurance or generic freight insurance typically won't adequately cover high-value diamond parcels. Specialized diamond carriers generally offer this as part of their service; buyers hand-carrying goods should separately confirm coverage through their own insurer before traveling.
Plan this before you buy, not after
The logistics of getting a purchase home should factor into how you structure a deal — including payment timing and whether a manufacturer's export team handles shipping arrangements directly. This is exactly the kind of detail a hosted VisitSDB visit helps plan in advance, working through your Surat manufacturer's existing export process rather than improvising it after a purchase is made.
